Natural Support for Infertility

We may all have been touched by infertility in some way, be it through our personal experiences or that of friends, or family members such as our children, nieces or grandchildren. This is no surprise as fertility rates in the western world are in decline and the number of individuals and couples seeking medical help to start a family has risen dramatically in recent years. Currently one in five New Zealanders are affected by infertility

Infertility is the inability to achieve conception after a year of unprotected intercourse or not being able to carry pregnancies to a live birth. Approximately 30% is caused by male factor problems, 30% by female, 30% both and 10% unexplained.

The reasons for the increase in infertility are many. These may include, but are not limited to increased age of parents, environmental pollutants, nutritional deficiencies, toxic farming methods, exposure to heavy metals, unhealthy body weight, infection and stress.

The Naturopathic approach to supporting fertility includes improving the bodies detoxification pathways, correcting nutritional deficiencies, and enhancing hormonal function and sperm health through the use of Herbal Medicines. We believe that a healthy body is a fertile body, and a person’s fertility can reflect their health and wellbeing.

The preconception period is of vital importance to achieving a healthy pregnancy and birth. In the same way we plan our house renovation or wedding, we should also plan for one of the most important life decisions, having a baby.  Research indicates that what we do in the months before we become pregnant profoundly effects not only the health of the unborn child but also that of future generations. A women’s eggs take 120 days to mature before being released at ovulation, and males sperm takes around 80 days to develop and mature and be ready for ejaculation. During this time the sperm and eggs are susceptible to damage. Therefore, during the 3-4 months before conception (the pre conception period) are a crucial time for being in peak health and avoiding environmental and social toxins.

The Naturopathic approach can also be used alongside assisted reproductive technologies such as IVF. Recent research suggests that combining naturopathic treatments and IVF more than doubles conception success rates.

The Herbal Dispensary has a comprehensive range of prenatal nutrients and fish oils, as well as specific nutraceuticals to support genetic wellbeing and reduce the impact of environmental toxins on reproductive health.
